His mother-in-law, Edith—always well-groomed and youthful—possesses explosive energy, and his uncle, Ernest, has taken charge of managing his entire estate. Julie’s aspirations are simple. He adores art; he lives and feels like an artist. Painting and music have each captivated him in turn. He never achieved material success simply because he did not pursue it vigorously enough. Elsa admires him boundlessly, yet it is difficult to place one's trust in an artist whom his contemporaries stubbornly refuse to recognize.
